Telling Time with Momma Minute and Baby Hour!

Hello sweet friends!
It's Shana from Mrs. Grooms' Room!

I hope everyone is having a great October!  I know I am!!!  I think I have been soaking myself in pumpkin spice! YUM-O!

We've been working really hard on time to the hour in my class this past week. We have split up our time unit so that we teach time to the hour now and time to the half-hour later in the year.  I LOVE teaching about time.  One reason is because it is so easy to do and the other reason is my first graders think...

Haha!  I love my firsties.  But when they can look at a real clock and they can read it in real time and understand what it means...it's a big time, people.

One of the units that I have created is near and dear to my heart.  It is called Telling Time with Momma Minute and Baby Hour.  I love using Momma Minute and Baby Hour in my lessons because my students totally relate to both characters and their jobs on the analog clock.

They understand that Momma Minute counts the minutes because she is bigger than Baby Hour.  She also counts ALL of the minutes all day.  Baby Hour counts the hours cause there's only 12 of them.

(My students always ask me about the daddy.  We call him Daddy Second cause he counts the seconds.  He and momma work really hard.)   :)   It works EVERY. TIME.

Here's what inside...

There are flashcards, vocabulary words, visual aids, a clock craftivity, printables, matching cards, and some all-time favorite games like Scoot, and I have...Who has?  You can find Momma Minute and Baby Hour here!

I hope you enjoy using Momma Minute and Baby Hour as much as the kids do and me, too!  Sooooo..for the next three days this unit is just a DOLLAR!!! Take advantage of the time!!

Be sure to check these two helping hands out!!

Dear Mr. President...A Letter Writing Unit

Hey everyone!

When I was in the second grade, we had to write to the President.  Boy, was I nervous.  You had to make a good impression, right?  This is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!  You had to be able to write a letter discussing important political ideas and theories.  Debate international policies and create a plan for world peace.  AND you had to have great handwriting.

Okay...okay... I KNOW I didn't write about political ideas, theories, or international policies!!!   I AM  99.9 percent sure I wrote about my beagle, Murdock, and my little brothers.  And I pray my handwriting was legible. :/

(I must take this opportunity to embarrass all of my siblings.  Eldest sibling op!)

But having the opportunity to write to the President is wonderful for teachers and students!!  It's a chance to implement social studies into our writing unit and to practice writing letters.  You probably remember that we wrote to Santa in December.  Let me tell you...it was a great unit. My students did not mind one jolly iota!

Here is some Trivia Crack for you...

Did you know that an iota is the ninth letter in the Greek alphabet?  I had no idea.  Our ninth letter happens to be the letter i.  You learn something everyday!!

Note:  Do you all play Trivia Crack??  Oh my word... so fun...even for the not so good trivia players like me it is a great chance to grow a dendrite. Just look up Trivia Crack in the app store.  Possible brain break idea!!!

So...please forgive me if this post looks a little familiar  :)   Here is the unit that I will be using for our President's Day unit.

You will find everything that you need in this little unit to write to the President:
There are posters, practice pages, writing organizers, and scaffolding writing papers!  It is a chance to take their writing through the writing process and show them how to write a letter.

Here is a peak at what is inside...

  • There are pages that you can use to introduce letter writing or anchor charts. We are fortunate enough to have a poster maker at my school.  (However, I love to use them on my Smartboard to introduce lessons, or practice with students.)
  • You can practice the parts of a letter.
  • Proof-read children's letters to the President .
  • You can check for understanding or comprehension of letter writing.
  • Students can use graphic organizers to help them brainstorm, and plan their letters to the President.
  • And there are writing papers for different levels of students, whether the level or age!!  Or you can scaffold their letters from the first draft while they are still learning how to write a letter, to their final draft...the one President Obama will be reading!
CHECK IT OUT BELOW!!!

And of course, there is even a chart to help students learn how to address an envelope and a template to make one.

Don't forget about the vocabulary words!! Those are available to you, too!

And because it's only patriotic to put this unit on sale...you can find it here!  it's only ONE DOLLAR!!!!  Check it out it will be available for a dollar until January 28th!!!   Now that is something to write to the President about!

Dear Mr. President...

Hello sweet friends!  Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!!

It's Mrs. Grooms from Mrs. Grooms' Room!!!  !!  I hope you are having a wonderful day full of happiness and surprises!! Isn't Christmas the best?

Did your students write to Santa?  My students loved writing to Santa and some of the letters were absolutely priceless.  We used the Dear Santa...Letter Writing Unit that you can find in my store.  Did you grab this cutie?  It's on sale right now!!!

Since my kids liked writing to Santa sooo much...I thought I would create a second letter writing unit!!  AND we are going to write to the PRESIDENT of the USA!!!

This is so exciting since President's Day is just around the corner!!  And this is just another opportunity to hone our letter writing skills and really set the writing wheels in motion.

Here is a peak at what is inside...

I use a lot of the pages for whole group lessons or "anchor charts for your Smartboard."  You can practice the parts of a letter, proofread the letters to the President and even review how to address an envelope.

Take a look at some of the activity sheets that you will use with your students.  There are sheets to label the parts of a letter, proofread letters from other students, and graphic organizers to brainstorm!

Brainstormers!!  The President will be so PROUD!!

Now for the first draft, the second draft, and last, the final draft!   You never know, your students could be writing for the President one day!!

There are even papers for those who are older students!

And of course, you have to know how to address an envelope, right?

And included are some words your students, will definitely want to know how to spell!

It's definitely writing you can add to your President's Day unit!  And you can find it here at my store.

Grab the "Dear Santa..." if you need it for next year.  It is just a dollar for the next three days!!!

I hope all of my sweet friends have a wonderful day.  Enjoy the sweet time with your loved ones!!!!

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

I have been very good this year.  I would love to have a puppy and a new bike. I hope you have been staying warm this season cause we have had some cold nights!  Please tell Mrs. Claus and Rudolph that I said hello!   I have left some cookies for you.  You like chocolate chip cookies, right?
Love,
Sammy

DON'T you love it when kits write to Santa?  It's so stinking cute and every letter makes me smile. AND for teachers????  It's a great time to learn to write letters!!  See how sneaky I am?? We will begin as soon as we get back from Thanksgiving holidays so I am super excited to get started!

Here is the unit that I will be using!  It's called "Dear Santa..."

You will find everything that you need in this little unit to write to Santa!
Posters, practice pages, writing organizers, and scaffolding writing papers!  If you are like me, you have some students who think writing is NOT fun and by that I mean torturous!! But again...we are writing to Santa!!  So that makes it FUN and by that I mean. "They like writing!"

Here is a peak at what is inside...

There are pages that you can use to introduce letter writing or anchor charts. We are fortunate enough to have a poster maker at my school.  (However, I love to use them on my Smartboard to introduce lessons, or practice with students.)  You can practice the parts of a letter, proof-read children's letters, or check for understanding.

Students can use graphic organizers to help them brainstorm, and plan their letters to Santa.

And there is writing paper for different levels of students, whether the level or age!!  Or you can scaffold their letters from the first draft while they are still learning how to write a letter, to their last draft. Santa's copy! :)

And of course, there is even a chart to help students learn how to address an envelope and a template to make one.

Don't forget about the vocabulary words!! Those are available to you, too!
