Decomposing Numbers The Apple Pie Way!

Happy Fall, everyone! It's Gina from Miss Peluso's Kindergarten, here to share some Fall fun! Are you looking for ways to incorporate the Fall season into your lessons? Last year, I wanted to find a fun and engaging way to teach my students how to compose and decompose numbers. They just weren't "getting" that numbers are made up of smaller numbers, no matter how many activities we tried! After our trip to the apple orchard, I decided that a real world connection might be just what they needed! What's a better way to incorporate both real world connections and Fall than apple pie?!
I decided that the lessons would focus on "recipes" to make apple pie. The recipe would call for a number of apples, and we would figure out how many red and yellow apples we could use to get to the total number of apples that we needed.

We counted out the number of apples that we needed, and placed them in a bucket. Each apple card is double sided (red on one side, yellow on the other). One student got to shake up the bucket and dump the apple cards onto the table.
Then, we sorted the apple cards by color so we could see how many red apples and how many yellow apples we could use in our recipe so that we met the total number of apples that our recipe called for.
We recorded our findings, and talked about how the larger number (the total number of apples) was made up of the two smaller numbers (the red apples and the yellow apples). Then, we put the apples back into the bin, and played again to see if we could make a different combination!
My students really understood the concept of composing and decomposing with this connection to a real life recipe! Of course, we had to end our week with some REAL apple pie!

Want to make some real world connections with your students?! This activity covers numbers 1-10, and is on sale for $1 through Friday!

Spooky Math Games

Hi everyone! This is Rachel from 2nd Grade Rock Stars. Welcome back to Teacher Deals and Dollar Steals.  I hope everyone is back into the swing of things and you are having a great school year.  I can't believe that it is mid October!

I don't know about you, but my school REALLY CELEBRATES October 31st!  I know not everyone celebrates Halloween but my school goes all out, including a huge Halloween party on a Saturday.

These math games can be played throughout the year and will help your kiddos reinforce their math skills. When ever I pull out these games, my kids scream!  They just love the friendly ghosts or spooky characters.

For the next 3 days (October 16th through the 19th) I am putting my spooky math games on sale for ONLY $1!

First up are the Spooky Addition and Spooky Multiplication Scoot game. My kids love scooting around the room while practicing their addition or multiplication facts. What kid does not love getting up out of their seat??

Have your kids practice their multiplication facts by matching the equations with the haunted house.

My kids also love the ghosts in these two next games.

But grab them fast because they are only on sale through October 19th! After that, the games will go back to regular price.

 What are you waiting for??

Thanks for stopping by and saying hi,
Rachel

Spooky Math Games

Hi everyone! This is Rachel from 2nd Grade Rock Stars. Welcome back to Teacher Deals and Dollar Steals.  I hope everyone is back into the swing of things and you are having a great school year.  I can't believe that it is mid October!

I don't know about you, but my school REALLY CELEBRATES October 31st!  I know not everyone celebrates Halloween but my school goes all out, including a huge Halloween party on Saturday.

My last school did not celebrate Halloween, but kids love spooky math games all year long!!  These math games can be played throughout the year and will help your kiddos reinforce their math skills.  When ever I pull out these games, my kids scream!  They just love the friendly ghosts or spooky characters.

For the next 3 days (October 15th through the 18th) I am putting my spooky math games on sale for ONLY $1!

First up are the Spooky Addition and Spooky Multiplication Scoot game. My kids love scooting around the room while practicing their addition or multiplication facts. What kid does not love getting up out of their seat??

In the beginning of the year, I play Monster War with my kids. Aren't these monsters so cute? My kids love addition war and love beating their partners. Sometimes I use the addition cards while the kids are lining up or while they are using the restroom as a class. It keeps them quiet and keeps instruction going even when we are not in the room. Love It!! :)

Have your kids practice their multiplication facts by matching the equations with the haunted house.

Right now I have 6 spooky math games on sale for only $1.

But grab them fast because they are only on sale through October 18th! After that, the games will go back to regular price.

What are you waiting for?? Go check out the Spooky Math Games before you miss out on the sale.

Thanks for stopping by and saying hi,
