Word Mats for October {Proud to be Primary}

Hi everyone! It's Elyse from Proud to be Primary
I'm excited to be back sharing October Word Mats with you!
Word Mats are similar to Math Mats and take the same format, but cover ELA standards.
Word Mats for October provides a lot of practice on many different language skills.
Proud to be Primary's October Word Mats provide tons of ELA practice of skills and spiraling review of concepts on each mat.
I created Word Mats so that I had something to give my students to practice the ELA concepts that we needed to know on a daily basis. I wanted each page of this resource to provide an abundance of learning opportunities, as well as the necessary review that is needed in order for students to retain an understanding of ELA skills and standards.

Here is the breakdown of a Word Mat.
Proud to be Primary's October Word Mats provide tons of ELA practice of skills and spiraling review of concepts on each mat.

Each Word Mat is different and each month touches on almost ALL of the Common Core Standards for Language for first grade. It will also work as ELA review for second grade and for those in Kindergarten needing a challenge. You can be confident that your students are learning and practicing the necessary skills in ELA each month!

ELA Skills Covered in Word Mats
*Rhyming Words - Word Families
*Printing/Handwriting
*Nouns
*Verbs
*Pronouns
*Adjectives

Another reason why I LOVE these mats is the low-prep aspect. They are print and go style printable sheets that lend themselves well to many uses.

Copy Word Mats on card stock and laminate. You could also put the pages inside a wipe-off cover. Give students a dry erase pen to complete the Word Mat for that day. After they complete a mat, they simply clean it off and give to someone else to complete. They work great for your literacy center and during your fast finisher time.

You can print Word Mats on seasonal colored paper. You can keep them stored for each month ready to go.

A cover page is provided in each Word Mat pack with the option of creating a booklet for your students. These booklets work great for morning work time or for homework packets to send home with your students each month. Parents would love that!

Do you use Interactive Notebooks? Well, look no further...Word Mats are perfect for your math journals or interactive notebooks!

Simply, change your printer settings to print off a smaller, scaled copy of a Word Mat. Follow the steps below!

Word Mats work great, as well during your small group time!

Another option for keeping Word Mats and other ELA activities all in one place is to use a three pronged folder. I love using these types of folders because my students can keep them in their book baskets or desks and they are easily accessible when needed.

You could make a copy of the monthly Word Mats for each students to place inside their folder and use for morning work and homework.

Here is close-up sample of a Word Mat. Each mat has a spot for your students' name and the date. Each Word Mat is clearly represented with the ELA concept (heading) at the top of each section. The instructions are below the headings and important text is in bold to help students complete the activities. Seasonal and related graphics are used to clearly represent the questions.

Book Reports for Young Readers and Writers

Well, I’m sure the school year is off and running for all of us by now and that means that we are busy, busy, BUSY!  I’m teaching Transitional Kindergarten this year so I’m off on a new adventure.  Luckily my family is taking up the slack at home.  It's not uncommon for me to walk in the door to dinner on the table- yes, I'm a lucky gal!

Last year I had some fabulous readers in my kindergarten class so I came up with a fun way for them to share about the books they were reading.  BOOK REPORTS!

These also worked great for the kiddos who were still having books read to them.  I know that I didn't invent book reports, but I did make them easy for Kindergartners and First Graders to complete.

Look at all the Common Core Standards that are covered!

The book reports are for both fiction and non-fiction texts.  Kids can draw pictures or answer with words, whatever works best for them.  These are designed for younger kids, but if you think that your older kids could benefit from them, then by all means, give them a try.  They are only $1, so it’s worth the gamble.

There is also a sheet for an Author Study and one for Sequencing.  These work great incorporated into your units of study.

And if you are looking for something that’s FREE- look no further!  I have cute labels that I use in my centers to help kids choose an activity.  They can choose to work alone, with a partner, or with a small group and they can tell just by looking at the label on the bin, what kind of activity it is.

These labels have simplified my life.  The classroom runs much more smoothly and the kids function much more independently.  Click here to grab the labels and give them a try.

Wishing all my fellow teachers out there a great school year.
Happy September!

A Deal and a Steal for Spring!

I'm excited to have a $1 deal and a steal for you!  The dollar deal is this super cute set of ELA stations for Spring & Summer.

Click the image below to go grab them up!

Grab up this fun game below for free.  It is a fun way to practice nonsense words and great to have on hand if you use DIBELS testing in your school.

This game is designed to be fun and easy to use!  Cut, laminate and place the cards in a bucket.  During small groups, students pull one of the cards.  If they can read the nonsense word, they can keep the card.  If they can’t, they place the card back in the bucket.  There are “Bucket Dump” cards included.  If the students pull one of these cards, they have to dump all of their cards back in the bucket!  This should be a fact paced game so you can practice as many nonsense words as possible!

Head on over to my TpT store to grab up these deals!

Differentiated Word Wall

Hi Friends!

I'm Melissa from Mrs. Dailey's Classroom and today I'm sharing all about my interactive, differentiated word wall.

You guessed it! For the next 3 days it will be on sale for $1.00!

The yellow and blue cards that you see on my word wall are from the Fry Word Lists. Currently I am using lists 1-6 and picking words to hang up that are from phonics patterns or content areas that we are working on at this time.

In just a few steps, you too can have a differentiated word wall that helps all of your students become better spellers!

First, print the word lists and copy them onto construction paper. Then laminate them, cut 'em out, and put magnetic tape {the interactive part} on the back.

Next, start building your word wall with your students. Teach them how they can take words off the wall and bring them to their seats. My rule is that after they use the card they must put it back for other students to access {but you can manage this how you see fit!}.
I printed the Fry Word List 1-3 on blue paper and Lists 4-6 on yellow paper as a management system for me. That way, I know where to put the words at the end of the year and can quickly identify what list they go to. Again, do this how you see fit!
Ready to start your own differentiated, interactive word wall? Grab the lists for only $1 here!

I also have a few more items that are only $1.00 to celebrate my good friend Amanda's birthday for today and tomorrow only!

I made sure to put my top sellers up for $1.00 grabs!

Grab each one by clicking on the link {it's name}

2 small group reading comprehension sets which go along with The Magic Tree House Series
Happy Shopping, Friends!

Cite Your Evidence!

Helllllooooo there everyone and happy Saturday!
I am so happy to be with you on this fall morning.

A few weeks ago, I posted a picture of something I was working on on my Facebook page.  The feedback was so immediate and positive that I knew it just had to be the next thing I offered for a dollar on this collaborative blog!

As you know, I moved to third grade this year.  I feel so lucky that the 2nd grade teachers did so much to ready our students for finding text evidence.  Being a second grade teacher last year myself, I can say that much time was spent teaching the kids to go back to the text to support their answers.  This year, however,  I need to get these kids used to the fact that they need to formally cite their evidence.  It's a requirement on our state exam and that exam is not as far off as it seems.

I have to be honest, I thought this would be difficult at first, but it truly has not been.  Here's how it went down in my room (modeling, guided practice, independent practice):
  • I introduced these cute little posters to the kids during one of our comprehension work sessions.
  • I modeled how to use the sentence starters to cite evidence from the text we were reading together.
  • The students worked in pairs to use a sentence starter to answer questions about the reading.
  • I gave each table group some of the laminated posters to keep at their desks during independent work time. They used the sentence starters from the posters as they answered questions from the text.
  • Each day, I rotated the posters to new tables so that the children would be exposed to all of the sentence starters.
With only a week of practice, most of my students are using these sentence starters to cite evidence quite well.  They LOVE to use them in their spoken answers.  I think it may be because I told them that they sound like college students when they do that! :) (whatever works!)  At this point, their written responses still need practice and refinement. However, I feel confident that with continued practice (and reminders from these posters!) my students will be very prepared to cite their evidence come test time!

As always, I am happy to be sharing with you here at Teacher Deals and Dollar Steals!  Be sure to stop by my Teacher's Chair blog to see the latest happenings from my classroom!

Have a great weekend everyone!
