The Forecast Calls for a Flurry of Learning!

Happy Sunday from the snow-covered Midwest!

Winter word work is fun and valuable with a variety of word study activities sure to interest and engage your primary grade students!

I'm here to share a
literacy skill pack that was inspired by the abundance of
fluffy white stuff Mother Nature
sent to my hometown!

Know that it was created
over the course of  one weekend and a
SNOW DAY!

During the months of December and January
my class was studies how animals adapt, migrate, or hibernate
during the winter, so I combined some of that unit vocabulary with new words that I
want to introduce to my group this week as part of our upcoming "snow study" to bring you.....

Half the fun of designing this resource was being able to use some of my
new Krista Wallden clip art!
My students are just going to love the cute snow animal buddies,
and I hope that yours will too!

As always, I tried to include a variety of activities in this product
that can be used in a few different ways in your classroom.
I know that my group has many levels of learners at this halfway point in our school year,
and while some are ready for a challenge, many continue to need reinforcement and review
in the areas of vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension.

All three of these activities can be part of a whole group lesson, used at a literacy center, or
completed individually.  Teacher tips for prepping materials and
step-by-step instruction cards are provided for each activity.

I pulled the 36 words for the packet's picture clue cards from
some of my favorite fiction, non-fiction, and poetry read alouds
so that they can also be used as a reference when students
want to respond to the  texts we've read in writing.

This "read the room" activity gets students up and moving, and requires that
they work collaboratively to find the word that correctly solves each
riddle.  There's nothing like a classroom scavenger hunt  for mystery words
to make learning more fun and engaging, especially when  it is
too cold outside for your students to burn off excess energy
on the playground!

Students will continue being word detectives using four original stories I've written.  This context clue activity requires them to read each text three times.   The first time through, they
will just skip over the words that are missing.  During the second reading,
they will choose and write the correct term from the word bank provided to complete
each sentence.  Then they will read the story a third time to themselves
or to a friend for fluency practice.

Thanks so much for dropping by!  Be sure to bundle up and be
safe if you are also living in the polar vortex at present!  If you are
in a place where the sun is shining, then I envy you!

Head to my store to grab this resource

books, as well as a 2014 photo of the view out my front door....

Stay warm my friends!  I hope you'll visit me over at
