I recently entered Astrobrights' Colorize Your Classroom Challenge. The challenge was an opportunity for teachers to display their creative talents in the areas of organization, decor, instruction and memorization.

As you can see, Lunar Blue and Martian Green are the NEW BLACK! Since I spend the majority of my day confined to my classroom, I decided to make my learning space functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Institutional, classroom chic no longer worked for me. It was time to jazz things up and live life in color...TECHNICOLOR! 

To enhance my new classroom makeover I created pennants. The pennants were the cherry on top of a chic chevron cake. Say what you want, Chevron is not dead!

Rules of Engagement

As educators, we know the importance of classroom management. Effective classroom management includes established rules and clear procedures. Establishing rules and procedures at the beginning of the school year will help to create a productive, structured learning environment. As well, rules and procedures let students know what is expected of them and reduces classroom disruptions and wasted time. 

To help establish an effective management system in my classroom, I created these jazzy, "subway art" inspired rules posters. My rules are posted in a visible area in the morning meeting area.  When the students display behaviors indicating they are NOT ready for learning, I refer them to the rules posted.

Parent Pleasing Notes?!?! Yes please!!

Hey teacher friends! I am EXCITED to be joining the Teacher Deals, Dollar Steals team! {And telling you about the latest $1 deal!!} My name is Katie Palmer and I blog at Pop into Primary. I teach 2nd grade in MN. 

Alright...let's get to it. I LOVE telling parents happy, exciting, amazing news about their child, not only as a learner, but about their character as well. Don't you?? I used to do what I called "sunshine calls", and I still do them, but I wanted a quicker, easier way to let parents know just how awesome their kiddos are. Thus the creation of my Back to School Parent Pleasers.

This pack of notes contains 20 different notes to send home with your kiddos to make them feel special like the king or queen of the world. Each note is provided in black and white or color version. Some of the notes have various clip art options and skin tones options bringing it to 50 pages!! AND....it is only $1.00...for a limited time!! 

Above you see some of the parent pleaser notes, I couldn't fit them all in one picture! Like I said, I try to send home two a week. That is not to each kid, each week. Two total. If you do the math, there are about 36 weeks of school (is that right?) and times two that is 72 notes!! 72 times I have sent praise home that not only makes the students feel great {praise from their teacher AND now their parent!} but makes the parents smile.

In my classroom I prefer to use the black & white versions. That way, the lucky kiddo that gets to take home the parent pleaser gets to color it too!?! (This is an amazing honor for 2nd graders!) 

Lastly, how do I store these notes AND keep track of who has gotten a note? I keep it simple. I have one of those expandy files things...you know what I mean...right? :) I labeled the tabs and store two types of notes in each pocket. (I clip them together by color, b & w, or clip art type since a few of them have six versions!) When I want to send one home, I just pull out my trusty expandy and there it is!

On the back of the expandy (I think I like that name for it) I tape a list of my students, and tally mark when I send home a note with them. Sometimes I jot down what note it was.

Get Organized For The Upcoming Year

I'm so excited to be blogging here!  I look forward each day to reading everyone's posts and grabbing the Deals and Steals offered by these amazing authors.

This summer I've been doing my fair share of relaxing and rejuvenating, but I've also been doing A LOT of organizing!  I've been cleaning out closets at home and organizing lessons and materials at school.  It's a lot of work, but boy does it feel GREAT when it's done.  If you are like me, then your are busy, busy, BUSY during the school year, so summer time is practically the only time to really dig in and get the big projects done.

Getting That Classroom Library Organized!

Hi ya'll! This is my first time getting to share with you here on Teacher Deals and Dollar Steals and I am so happy to be here! I am going to share a brand new organization system for my classroom library that I can't wait to set up... but I am NOT going to visit my classroom anytime soon! ;)

Brag Tags, the Inexpensive Behavior Incentive!

What are brag tags?

Brag tags are small, rectangular pieces of paper that students can earn as academic and behavior incentives. Brag tags can be hung on backpacks or made into a necklace.

I use small chains or binder rings to hang the tags on my students' bags. The binder rings are actually working out the best because they stay closed better and are easier to open when we add new tags.

On Monday my students received these two tags! I seriously love giving out new tags. It makes my day to see the students going crazy over receiving this little ol' piece of paper! My kiddos are keeping track of how many they've earned so far this year. Some of their keychains are starting to fill up and they may need a second one soon! Love it!!!

They get the homework club tags for doing ALL of their weekly homework each month. I've noticed it really helps with getting homework turned in! They don't want to miss out on a tag!

The 100th day of school tag comes from my Special School Days pack.

The kiddos also got a tag for Groundhog Day (not pictured) from my Holiday tags pack! The special days and holiday tags are fun because it gives every student in the class to earn a tag.
