Addition & Subtraction Task Cards {Miss Fegan's Magnificent Munchkins}

I hope y'all are having a fabulous summer! I am in sunny, but cold wintery South Africa for the summer and can't wait to get back to the warmer weather in South Carolina!!! Just 3 weeks left until its back to school. How long do y'all still have?

Anywhooo... I am SOOOOO EXCITED to be apart of this collaborative blog with all these AH-MAY-ZING teacher-author-bloggers and I can't wait to share my deal with you this month!

Today, I am sharing a set of my Addition and Subtraction Task Cards. I LOVE LOVE LOVE task cards (yes that is a lot of love). There are so many things you can do with them like centers, scoot, review, small groups and on and on and on.

This is set is 3 digit by 3 digit Addition and Subtraction. It includes problems that require regrouping and some that don't.

There are 112 Addition and Subtraction COLOR task cards. They are split into 7 sets of 16 (8 Addition and 8 Subtraction) and are color coded. Below is an example:

  

I have also included a black and white printer friendly version of all the task cards sets as well. So it is up to you, which you would prefer to use in your classroom. 

I sometimes print the black and white versions into a small booklet and send it home with learners for homework.

I have also included a recording sheet that learners use to record their answers, as well as an extra "working out space" sheet. Not all my students use the "working out space" sheet that I have included. Some prefer to use a white board and others like to work on the task card. Once they are laminated, its easy to use a white board marker on them.

Mastering Math Facts {with The Primary Gal}

Hey there!  It's Amanda from The Primary Gal!  My post today is a product that seemed to take FOREVER to create and perfect!  But my goodness, it was totally worth it.  Seriously.  I don't know about you but many of my fifth grade students tend to struggle with basic multiplication facts.  It's sad to see them understanding HOW to do things but not be able to complete tasks correctly and consistently due to math fact mastery.  So as any teacher-author would do, I set to creating a solution!

Now, maybe I've been helping my kindergartener with her book club where they use these folders to transport books to and from school; but I felt that I just had to create a self-paced system that would allow students to master multiplication facts and build mathematical confidence.  Or....MAYBE I just wanted an excuse to use these ADORABLE folders!  Either way, I set to work!

Last year, I found an old copy of Dr. Carl Seltzer's book Multiplication Facts in Seven Days.  I loved the way he broke up the facts and allowed students to use the commutative property of multiplication to lighten the load of fact mastery.  Why spend time learning your 1's, followed by your 2's, and 3's?  By the time they get to the 6's, they are DONE!

So I set to work making printer friendly flash cards and assessments for my students to begin using.  I passed them out and explained the system to parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences to ensure that they understood that the program is self paced and what my expectations were.  I also included a parent letter incase they didn't attend conferences or needed a refresher later.

Inside each folder is a ziplock baggie with the facts for Set One.  Set One is the largest set but only includes eight facts.  When the parent feels that the student is able to fluently answer each fact in the folder they return it to school.  I then assess the students using quick, printer friendly assessments.

My students have actually enjoyed doing these.  Since I am only doing it with about six students in my classroom and six students in the other fifth grade classroom, they feel a little *privileged* to have something that the other students don't.  My fear was that the opposite effect would happen.  They have handled it well and have been very motivated to move through the six sets.

Back to School Printables {from The Primary Gal}

It's that time of year again.  I'm busy planning and preparing for the upcoming year.  This summer, one of my goals is to create several sets of simple, themed printable computation sets for one of my centers.  I have a few sets completed and would love to share them with you today for my monthly Dollar Steal!

I don't know what it is about pages like this, but my kids LOVE them!  Each page contains seven problems for students to complete.  Then, they paste the correct answer next to the problem.

I am pretty sure every student in my room races to my computation center when it involves a spinner!  With this engaging printable, students spin two numbers and then either add, subtract, or multiply them together.

I always love seeing my kids reaction to this printable.  I like for them to see that multiple combinations of numbers can all have the same sum, difference, or product.  With this center, they solve twelve problems and sort them between three different answers.

Build the Biggest Ice Cream Cone Math Games

Hi everyone! I'm Rachel from 2nd Grade Rock Stars. I Hope everyone is having a relaxing beginning of the summer, or if you are like me...a relaxing (HA HA) end of the school year. I still have 10 days left until school ends here in New York.

Today I want to share 4 different math games that will be $1 for the next 3 days. I don't know about your kids, but my kids love playing math games and competing against each other. So with the summer in mind I am bring you 4 different math games with an ice cream theme.

My kiddos love my Build the Biggest Ice Cream Cone games. The objective of each game is to build the biggest ice cream cone. For each correct answer, the children get to add the scoop of ice cream to their cone. The biggest ice cream cone at the end of the game wins!

My second graders love picking up the ice cream cones and comparing heights of the ice cream cones. I learned quickly how upset they would get if the ice cream cone and scoops of ice cream fell apart, so I attached velcro to the ice cream scoops and cones.

Addition Memory

Have your students practice composing and decomposing numbers.

This game can be played in two different ways!

Students can play Memory Addition where they have to match up equivalent number sentences or the number with an equivalent number sentence.
   
                                  OR

Students can play Addition sort where the students place the number as the heading and sort the number sentences that equal that number.

This set includes numbers 2-20.  For each number, there are 3 two addend addition sentences and 2 three addend addition sentences.

Meets Common Core Standards:
K.OA.3, 1.OA.6, 2.OA.2

St. Patrick's Day 3 Digit Addition Scoot

3-Digit Addition Scoot is a fast paced game that gets your students out of their seats and helps them to review their 3-digit addition with and without regrouping while having fun. Have students self check or peer check with the QR Codes!

2 different sets of cards are included! 
****The first set of cards has the QR Code on the addition card.
****The second set of cards has the QR Code on a separate card.
Choose the set of cards that works best for your class!

*This set has 36 addition cards with and without regrouping (tens and ones places.)

Classroom Hunting!

Who doesn't LOVE a good scavenger hunt?  In my classroom, anytime my kids see cards laying around the room, they are instantly engaged!  I recently updated a few of my older products and have been using them with a couple of tutoring groups after school.

Not only do my students love a good classroom hunt, but so do I.  They require very minimal preparation and are self checking for students.  It allows me to set my higher students free and assist my lower students as needed.  

I always begin by hiding the cards around the room.  I never tell them where the "Start" card is hidden.  They take their clip boards and recording sheets and make their way around the room.  After they find the "Start" card, they solve the problem given.  Once they have a confident answer to their problem, they make their way around the room and search for the answer.  This can be entertaining.  ;)

In the upper right hand corner of the card is the answer to the prior problem.  On this particular card, the quotient to the previous problem was 27.  When the student finds 27, they will quickly and quietly write down and solve the problem.  When they solve the problem shown above, they will discover that the quotient to this problem is 67.  Therefore, they will take off in search of the answer 67.  When they have successfully solved all of the problems, one answer will lead them to The END!
