Reading Tic Tac Toe Menus

Hello everyone!  It's Jayme from Teach Talk Inspire.  I hope you are having a wonderful week and are adjusting to the time change and post Halloween sugar rush!  I am talking today about a new approach to homework that my first grade team and I have been using this year that has been great for our students.  We have always sent book in the bags home for students to read with an adult for additional practice that matches their reading level.  But, while our reading logs were coming back completed, we wanted another way to hold students accountable for their reading at home.  Enter the Reading Tic Tac Toe homework packet!

On Mondays, my team and I send each student home with a leveled book and a reading tic-tac-toe menu that accompanies each story element skill that we're currently focusing on.

Each tic-tac-toe menu has a variety of activities that the student can choose to complete using their leveled books.  They have a choice of similar activities each week but have to complete at least 3 activities before Friday for their homework.

Each menu has a word hunt option for students to hunt through their books to find and record words that match their sort for the week.  This can also be used for a class-wide phonics or spelling pattern.

There are several options for students to respond to their reading by sequencing story events, comparing and contrasting characters, describing the setting of the story, and designing a new cover for their book.

One of the most completed options has been drawing and writing about their favorite part of the book.  Not only does this help keep students' accountable for their nightly reading, it also is a meaningful way for them to get additional practice with skills we're learning in school.

These tic-tac-toe menus can be used during school as well for follow-up activities, center work, or story maps in response to read alouds.

Grab these menus in my TpT store here for a discounted price for the next 3 days!  I hope you enjoy them!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Spring Read and Write (Close Reading)

Spring is finally here! I am ready for some warmer weather. I don't think I could survive living in the north. I don't know how some of you do it!

Here is a Spring Read and Write to help get you warmed up! These "Read and Writes" are great for introducing close reading. The students have to look back in the story to find the correct answer to complete the sentence correctly.

This Read and Write pack will help prepare your students with the reading comprehension skills they need. The short story in this packet is great for introducing close reading. Your kindergarten students should be ready for this resource by this time of the school year if they are meeting grade level expectations. If your students are still struggling, these short stories can be used for quick read alouds and then completing the sentences together. It makes great independent reading work for first graders.

Spring Read and Write

This product is AVAILABLE in a Read and Write Bundle
offering a SAVINGS of 12%.

In this three page Spring Read and Write pack, students will read the one page spring story and color the pictures. Then there are two pages with five sentences on each page about the story. Each sentence has a missing word. At the end of each sentence, there are two words for students to choose the correct missing word. Students will circle the word that correctly completes the sentence matching the story on the first page, and then write the correct word in the blank.

This is a great reading and comprehension check for guided reading, a mini lesson, a literacy center, or homework.

This short story is great for guided reading groups, homework, literacy center activities, independent reading, or for introducing close reading strategies.

Reading Comprehension: Who? What? How?

Wow! The third quarter of this school year is almost over. Time sure is flying by! Are your students ready for the next grade level? Have you prepared your students with the reading comprehension skills needed for success in the years ahead?

This reading comprehension packet on Who? What? and How? will help prepare your students with the reading comprehension skills they need. The short stories in this packet are also great for introducing close reading. Your kindergarten students should be ready for this resource by this time of the school year if they are meeting grade level expectations. If your students are still struggling, these short stories can be used for quick read alouds focusing on the Who? What? and How? questions included.

This 7 page book is designed so that you can copy the book, cut it in half, staple, and then it is ready for use. If you would rather use each story separate, you can do that without putting it together in book format. The seven pages consist of a title page "Who? What? How?" with each of the remaining 6 pages including a short story with a matching black and white picture. Under each short story, there are three questions about the story. The three questions ask "Who? What? and How? questions about the story.

The following photos show some of the stories included in the packet.

These stories can be put together in booklet form as discussed above or individual sheets can be used. The story/questions are on a half sheet of paper.

No matter what format you decide to use, there are many uses for these stories/questions. They can be used in a kindergarten class with the teacher reading the story and questions to the students and having the students use invented spelling to write their answers. They can also be used for independent reading practice in first or second grade by letting students read the short story, read the questions, and answer the questions even if they have to look back in the story to find the answer. Looking back in the text to find the answer is part of the popular "close reading" strategies.

These short stories are great for guided reading groups, homework, literacy center activities, independent reading, or for introducing close reading strategies.

I hope your students enjoy these stories and questions. If you like what you see in this product, it is currently available in my Reading Comprehension Bundle including 8 other reading comprehension books. This bundle offers a 15% SAVINGS! You can find the BUNDLE HERE!

I hope your students enjoy these stories and questions.

This Reading Comprehension: Who? What? How? is available for

Primary CloZe Reads Vol. 2 [BRAND NEW!]

Hi Friends~
It's Dianna from Sassy, Savvy, Simple Teaching! I'm so excited to be back this month with you again here on our collaborative blog. Remember, I'll be here the 23rd of each month.
[click on the photo above for a direct link, make sure to follow me for updates]

So I'm here this month to talk to you all again about Dibels. Dibels is an assessment known as a "screener". This type of assessment is very informative with the right set of data eyes.  Dibels stands for: Dynamic Indicators of Early Learning Skills. Dibels assessments are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early learning skills from Kindergarten through 6th Grade. They are designed to be short [1 min.] fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. [University of Oregon]

I have been using Dibels assessments [all versions] since paper/pencil and the Palm Pilot in 2004-2005 school year. I was like most at first, confused, hated it, but when you understand the data of an assessment then you begin to like it. If you never look at the data in this assessment other than the color, you will never understand it.

So I have a brand new products today that are geared towards the Dibels Daze assessment, but even if you don't Dibel it will work for anyone!

[click on the photo above for a direct link]

I hope everyone is getting back into the groove at school after the holiday break! I'm so excited to be back here again today with some of my best blogger friends!

Remember to always check back here each day, because every day a new $1.00 deal will be posted & it will last 3 days. Remind your teacher friends too!

So I'm back today with some items that have been requested by popular demand. So if you missed them last time, here's your chance!

Who here knows about nonsense words? Whether you assess them or not, we read them or hear them every day. Students are always making up words while practicing word families that are not real, or writing words that are not real, or better yet making up new words. It's crazy, but it happens!

So I am here today with my 3 day $1.00 deal --->

[click on the photo above for a direct link]

This product was designed to help students learn “about” nonsense words within real words and text. Teach them through a word study or phonics instruction within words and text. Nonsense Word Fluency [NWF] is a diagnostic assessment for early literacy skills for teachers to assess students ability to correctly blend sounds. This assessment helps the teachers to see which students are “word callers” and which students can blend sounds. This assessment shows that students who can do this easily will become fluent readers.

In this product you will receive 7 different activities that come with a teacher page as well.
